# Choose words for a practice session

> Pick Quick Play, a collection, or Explore words before you start a game.

Most games open a **Select Words** setup screen after you choose a mode. That screen decides which words appear in the session.

**1. Choose a practice mode**

Open [Practice](https://app.vocabmonster.com/practice) and pick a game. See [Games and practice](/help/using-the-app/games-and-practice.md) for what each mode does.

**2. Pick a word source**

On setup you typically choose one of these:

* **Quick Play** — Vocab Monster picks the words for this session (system vocabulary). This is different from the Quick Play button on the Practice page, which uses your **active saved words**. See [Quick Play](/help/using-the-app/quick-play.md).
* **Collections** — Practice a collection you created, including options such as favorites only or including archived words.
* **Explore** — Practice a public Explore collection. Learner and Courses plans can do this without saving every word first. See [Practice from Explore](/help/using-the-app/practice-from-explore.md).

**3. Set session options**

Choose how many words to include when the mode supports a count. Memory Match modes need at least **8** words and use a fixed board instead of a custom count.

**Replay missed words** is on by default. When it is on, words you miss come back later in the same session. When it is off, a miss counts and the game moves on. You can change the default in [Gameplay settings](/help/account/gameplay-settings.md).

**4. Start the session**

For AI games, pick **Default** or a specific model if you have AI credits remaining. Then start. Results and missed words are covered in [Practice results and missed words](/help/using-the-app/practice-results-and-missed-words.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> Speed Round starts immediately and does not use the collection picker. Flashcards, quizzes, and most other modes go through setup first.
